Climate drivers of bark beetle outbreak dynamics in Norway spruce forests

چکیده
2015, Raff a et al. 2015). Given the potential interactions of insect outbreaks with other biotic and abiotic disturbances and the potentially strong impact of changing disturbance regimes on forest resources (Buma 2015), investigating the climate drivers of bark beetle outbreaks is of paramount importance. In Europe, Ips typographus is considered one of the most destructive pests of conifer forests causing signifi cant economic losses on a regular basis (Gr é goire et al. 2015). At low population densities, I. typographus breeds in fresh wind-thrown or dying spruces and usually does not succeed in colonizing healthy trees that are protected by eff ective defense mechanisms (Krokene 2015). Extensive drought or windfall events can trigger beetle outbreaks by Ecography 40: 001–010, 2017 doi: 10.1111/ecog.02769 © 2016 Th e Authors. Diapause and overwintering of two spruce bark beetle species
Diapause, a strategy to endure unfavourable conditions (e.g. cold winters) is commonly found in ectothermic organisms and is characterized by an arrest of development and reproduction, a reduction of metabolic rate, and an increased resistance to adversity. Diapause, in addition to adaptations for surviving low winter temperatures, significantly influences phenology, voltinism and ultimately po...
متن کاملThresholds in the life cycle of the spruce bark beetle under climate change
Using a simple temperature-driven multistage threshold developmental model, we analyse the impact of climate change on the life cycle dynamics of the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. The completion of a full reproductive second generation within a single year (bivoltinism) might increase the risk of devastating bark beetle outbreaks. A network of more than 300 climate stations, comprising ti...
متن کاملWildfire and Spruce Beetle Outbreak: Simulation of Interacting Disturbances in the Central Rocky Mountains
Infrequent large-scale natural disturbance regimes are an integral component of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) forests of the central Rocky Mountains. Wildfires, bark beetle outbreaks, winds, and avalanches cause relatively drastic changes in community structure, composition, and function. These disturbances may occur independently or interact where the incidence of one may change the pot...
متن کاملSpatio-temporal patterns of the Norway spruce decline in the Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki (Western Carpathians) in southern Poland
A dramatic forest decline due to the bark beetle outbreak, which occurs in the Norway spruce stands in the Western Beskidy (southern Poland) since 2003, was started after severe physiological drought during winter time. An analysis describing some spatio-temporal characteristics of this process, with special regard to the patterns of bark beetle occurrence related to root fungal diseases, is pr...
متن کاملA common fungal associate of the spruce bark beetle metabolizes the stilbene defenses of Norway spruce.
Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests suffer periodic fatal attacks by the bark beetle Ips typographus and its fungal associate, Ceratocystis polonica. Norway spruce protects itself against fungal and bark beetle invasion by the production of terpenoid resins, but it is unclear whether resins or other defenses are effective against the fungus. We investigated stilbenes, a group of phenolic compou...
